Located in Southeast Asia you’ll find Laos – a country traversed by the Mekong Delta and known for its mountainous terrain. It’s a beautiful country to visit, but due to the more popular countries surrounding it, like Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, people tend to overlook this amazing place. But you shouldn’t! As it’s a stunningly beautiful, friendly and exciting to visit!

Here are a couple of reasons why you should travel off-the-beaten-track and take a trip to magical Laos:

1.) Lovely people: Lao people are the friendliest and most laid back people you will meet. The country only has a population of nearly 7 million people. Which is not a lot; however, there are 130 different ethnic minority tribes. These clans speak different languages (there are 4 main languages in the country), and they each have a specific way of life. While travelling here you will be able to catch a glimpse of all these different cultures in just one small country.
2.) Outdoor adventure: If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, then Laos is something for you! Cycling, trekking, rock climbing, kayaking, caving, abseiling, rafting … You can find amazing places to do all of this. Not only that, Laos has also made a huge commitment to responsible tourism, trying to be the premier eco-tourism destination in the region. We can’t think of an even better reason to visit Laos!
3.) Incredible landscapes: Amazing natural landscapes, limestone mountains, plains filled with urns, untouched jungles, waterfalls for days, rice fields, mountainsides, forest, impressive rivers such as the Mekong Delta … We can go on and on, on what kind of amazing landscapes you can find here, but it’s something you should see for yourself!
4.) Delicious food: Traditionally Laos food is eaten with sticky rice using fingers, often shared with family and friends, sitting on the floor sharing some delicious dishes. Here you won’t find processed food in Laos – everything is fresh and flavourful. Make sure to try popular dishes such as Laap (meat salad), Tam Mak Houng (Papaya salad) or Oh lam (stew).
5.) Incredible history and culture: The 130 different ethnic groups that live in this country should give you an idea on how diverse the history and culture is of this country. Here you’ll find the most impressive temples in the region, but also the Plain of Jars which date back some 2000 years, and the entire city of Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage site. So plenty to discover!
