Thailand has some of the most amazing beaches you can imagine. Often they pop up in the list of best beaches in the world, such as the 2017 list made by Islands.com in which Maya Beach on Koh Phi Phi Leh ended up on place 8 of 20. And on the 2017 100 best beaches around the world list by CNN Travel, 4 Thai beaches were mentioned – such as Phra Nang Beach in Railay and Sunrise Beach in Koh Lipe.

If you’re lucky you’ll find clear blue waters, white beaches and no person in sight! Unfortunately, there are plenty of beaches where you’ll find the blue waters and white beaches, but they also come along with loads of people and pollution. That’s why the Pollution Control Department of the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry assesses the environmental quality of tourist beaches around Thailand. After checking all these beaches they give them a score and come out with a list ranking each and every single one of them.

The ministry looks at 4 main aspects, being:
  • Pollution Control
  • Natural conditions
  • Environmental management
  • Tourism management

From the 390 beaches that were tested, 13 beaches received the coveted 5-star rating, being:
  1. Toey Ngam beach, Chonburi
  2. Laem Sala beach, Khao Sam Roy Yot National Park
  3. Ao Manao beach of the air force’s Wing 5
  4. Ao Kha, Ang Thong Islands National Park
  5. Sam Sao beach, Ang Thong Islands National Park
  6. Tham Rang beach, Ang Thong Islands National Park
  7. Thai Muang beach, Khao Lampi-Hat Thai Muang National Park
  8. Ao Kuak beach, Similan Islands National Park
  9. Mai Ngam beach, Surin Islands National Park
  10. Laem Tanot beach, Ko Lanta National Park
  11. Ko Rok beach, Ko Lanta National Park
  12. Pile beach, Than Bokkhorani National Park
  13. Ko Lidi beach, Phetra Islands National Park

Like us, you’ve probably never heard of most of these beaches, but they are definitely worth checking out. 3 of the beaches are in Surat Thani, 3 in Phang Nga, and 3 in Krabi. So probably these are great places to start to explore the cleanest beaches in Thailand. What are you waiting for? Ask us how to get to these beaches!
