Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, is the largest city of Myanmar. As such there are off course loads of people here, but also many things to do. You have the magnificently gilded Shwedagon Pagoda, amazing local fresh markets, the Sule Pagoda in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city’s CBD and historical center, the beautiful colonial architecture, and… we can go on. All great activities to do during the day.

But the city doesn’t stop living when the sun sets, so here are some of the things you can do on your evenings in the city:
  • Enjoy the sunset: and what better place to do this than at the beautiful Shwedagon Pagoda. We already mentioned this location as a great place to go to during the day, but maybe we like it even better during the night. This incredible pagoda is located on an elevated hill, which means it can be seen from almost everywhere in Yangon, but you also have some good sunset views. At night the shimmers of the daylight on the gold-plated stupa make place for sparkles. A magnificent sight.
Another great way to enjoy this incredible sight is not up close, but from a distance. For instance from Sapphire Bar & Lounge on the rooftop of the Alfa Hotel. https://alfahotelyangon.com/bars-restaurant/ Not only does this bar offer a birdseye view of the Shwedagon Pagoda, but also of the city down below! A truly unforgettable experience for an evening in Yangon!
  • Drink in style: if we’re talking about drinks anyways, why not get a drink in style. Where the Sapphire Bar & Lounge is a relaxed and laidback rooftop bar, The Strand Hotel is exactly the opposite. This 3-story Victorian building has marble floors and rattan furnishings. It is one of the oldest establishments you can find here, and noticeably a sister of Singapore’s Raffles Hotel. It was built in 1901, when the city was an important trade hub for the British Empire. But we weren’t talking about all of this. We were talking about having a drink here, which you should! As not only is this a great place to walk around, their longstanding Happy Hour on Friday Night is not to be missed! Not in town on a Friday night? No problem, just pop in and enjoy their famous Strand Sour. You won’t be disappointed.
  • Enjoy Inya Lake with the locals: a totally different, but still fun way, to spend the Yangon nightlife is being surrounded by locals at Inya Lake. Around the lake you’ll be able to find some nice restaurants with a great view over the water. But that’s not where the locals hang, you can actually find them around the lake on the lawn – a popular hangout for the younger Yangon crowd. And don’t worry, the roadside vendors have you covered for a Dragon or Myanmar beer or two! If you’re looking for a fun evening without spotting a tourist, this is the place to be.
  • Head into China town’s street 19: Street food is always a good idea, as you can really enjoy delicious local dishes. Yangon’s Chinatown goes from the 18th to the 24th street, and it’s one of the busiest areas in the city, especially after sunset. On street 19 you will find the best barbeque street food in the city! One of those places you have to have visited when in town. The seafood is their specialty, but you can more or less find anything that can be skewered here ;) Just pick and choose your kebab, and the stall owner will grill it right up for you!

What are you waiting for? Go out and discover the beauty that Yangon has to offer at night!  And should you need any further inspiration for your visit here, make sure to check out our tours and trips here
