Best time & places to travel in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is generally a year-round destination, however December to mid-April is considered to be the peak season for European clients. As a holiday destination Sri Lanka has two seasons : Winter (November to April) and Summer (May to October). This is mainly because of the two monsoon seasons. It is important to know which side of the island to focus on in any given month, and this is most important when planning which location for their beach stay.
For example if you are travelling during Summer months (May to October) we would suggest to head towards the east coast and northern regions (Passikudha, Arugambay and Trincomalee) for dry, sunny weather and swimmable sea as the west and south west coasts experience rain and rough sea currents at this time. The west and south west enjoy favourable weather conditions during the winter months (Novemeber to April) when the monsoon season then transfers to the east and north.
There is also an inter-monsoonal period during October and the first half of November, when rain and thunderstorms can occur across the island. This clears up as December nears, with conditions getting milder by the day during the second half of November.
As with many South-East Asian destinations, the period from December to mid-April is considered the peak season for overall weather conditions in Sri Lanka (Winter for Europe) and therefore many plan overseas trips during this time.
Hence we do change in locations and activities done during each season so that you can make the most of your holiday and visit the best parts of the island.
